Field Trip Day

Last Thursday, Clark's preschool class got to go on an all day field trip and Mom got to go with him.

Clark's class had spent the month of January talking about different jobs, so their cute teacher, Miss Jesika, set up a few places for them to go and see some of the jobs they had been talking about.

First stop was the dentist office.

 The Hygienist and well as the Dentist talk to the kids about what they do at the dentist, what they can expect when they come for dentist visit (for those who hadn't been yet) and what trip to a dentist office is complete without the reminder of the correct way to brush your teeth which is what the kids are all watching the hygienist do.

 She also let them each take a ride up and down in the dentist chair.

 In case you weren't sure, Clark thought it was pretty fun ride.

The dentist was kind enough to give each kid a present with a new toothbrush, floss, pencil, brushing timer, and coloring book!

Then we headed to the local Umpqua Dairy.

Apparently, school field trip are a rare thing here since there are so many moving parts and hot places the kids could get burned on. Since we had an inside connection (Miss Jesika's boyfriend works there and was willing to do the tour), we only had 7 kids and we made sure we had 4 adults for this tour so every child was holding an adults hand, we got to go!

No cameras where aloud inside, so there are no pictures, but we watched them fill gallon milk jugs as well as personal little milk boxes....just like at school as the preschools told us.

We saw cottage cheese being made...umm yeah.

We went into the REALLY REALLY cold locker to see where they store a lot of ice cream.

We saw many other things that I can't think of at the moment, but at the end of the tour we went into the room where they were filling huge tubs of strawberry ice cream....and got to sample some fresh strawberry ice cream which is more like soft serve. It was amazing and we all agreed that the fresh stuff is WAY better then once it's been hard frozen for the stores.

The best part might have been watching 7 preschools trying to walk super careful back to the front of the factory while eating their ice cream. You can tell it's good when they are all so careful not to drop even a drop!

 We did get one picture outside the dairy of all the kids showing off their chocolate milk sample while still wearing their hair nets (also a requirement inside the factory of course).

Next, it was onto the public library for story time and a little tour of the library.

The story time was all about mittens, so after story time they set to work on decorating a pair of mittens before heading on a tour.

 After the library, we headed to McDonald's for lunch and of course a little play time in the playground there.

After McDonald's, we left Roseburg with happy full kids and headed back to Winston to the local Post Office there.

This was the one tour that was definitely enjoyed more by the parents then the kids. True it was stop nunber five, but really they little preschoolers were not super impressed by the poor postal workers tour...she was trying really hard, but since it is a tiny post office, there are no machines and just hearing where the mail goes didn't hold these attention spans for long. The mom's thought it was cool to see...I guess just not for 4 year olds?!

The post office was nice though and sped it along and even gave each child a coloring book when they left.

We still had one stop left on our field trip and the Mom's were getting a little worried whether these 7 little friends could handle it, but we shouldn't have worried. Miss Jesika saved the best stop for last:

The Fire Department!

The Fire Chief, with the help of one of the paramedics, was nice enough to do a tour for us and he was a lot of fun.

I am not sure if you can tell, but he had these 7 kids captivated with his every word! There was no more goofing off, just attentive listening and question asking...it was super cute.

 He opened every door and showed them every tool on BOTH the fire trucks they have (and if he tried to skip one and the kids noticed, they made sure to let him know he'd missed one. They were both great about this, but at the same time you can understand why they decided not to take them into the ambulance, but just bring out highlights instead (otherwise we might have been there for hours! :) )

Clark got to be the one to try the heat sensing lamp on all his classmates.

 And they all got to feel how heavy the saws, drills and jaws of life are.

 As we continued the tour, the paramedic ran upstairs and slid down the poll to surprise the kids and though they thought it was cool, they weren't impressed he had used the stairs to go up...they thought he should have climbed up the poll too, so they did convince the fire chief to climb and cheered excitedly below as he did it for them.

 Then the paramedic got all his gear on while the chief explained each piece and they made sure to explain to the kids that though the firemen sound funny with their masks on, if they are ever in a fire and see a fireman coming towards them or hear a funny voice, they should call out to him and not be scared...that they are there to help. (Apparently, these two said that is one thing they sometime have problems with when kids are trapped in fires is that they run from the "scary men" or hide for the weird voices...so that was a good lesson to learn.)

 Clark obviously thought the paramedics voice with his mask on was funny!

 And these 7 kids where not missing a word!

Thanks WDFD for the fun visit and tour. You were great and the fire hats and goody bags the kids left with were loved as well.

After that it was back to school. 6 stops in 6 hours was a lot for these little ones, but they did so good and had such a fun time! As a reward they all got recess time before the moms dragged our tired kids home...mine definitely slept well that night and has been talking about many of the places ever since.
